Chapter 15

Thursday Noon

Work was better that day, at least until lunchtime. Jess was really turning up the pressure for a happy hour outing. Isabel didn’t want to come out and tell her that Thomas was spending the rest of the week commuting to New York from her little apartment. So far Isabel had only revealed that she and Thomas had talked and texted a few times. She wasn’t sure if it was because what she had with him had so much potential to leave her hurt and she didn’t want anyone to remind her of that possibility, or if she feared hurting Jess’ feelings when she was so vulnerable in her own love life. Jess knew Isabel was straight, but sometimes she just got a bit too close, or touched her hair, and she didn’t know if she was being oversensitive or what. Either way, she had this last overnight with Thomas and then he was back on the road. Jess would just have to wait.

She made it through her first two classes without checking for messages from him and then folded during lunch. She took her phone out of the locker and checked. Two messages had been received, one from her half sister, Madison, and the other from Thomas. She listened to the message from Maddie. She wanted to go to prom but didn’t have enough money. Their mother couldn’t do more than pay for her ticket so would Isabel please, please with sugar on top, cover the cost of a dress and hair appointment. This was her only chance for true happiness, blah, blah, blah. She was so much like their mother. Isabel would have to wait for her next paycheck and then decide how much she could give her.

The next message brought a smile to her face when she heard Thomas’ playful voice and adorable accent. “Hello, luv, I missed your warm body and sexy smell this morning; your cat is not as wonderful a puss to wake up to. I am bored at the office and want to see you again. How about I bring some Thai food over tonight and spare you any cooking … ahh … reheating efforts? I’ll pick up some wine too. Call me back if you have time or just hate Thai food.”

She quickly dialed his number, and a woman answered on the second ring. A rather chipper but professional voice spoke. “Mr. Morgan’s line, Shelly Clark speaking. May I help you?” Hmmm, who was this Shelly answering Thomas’ phone? Oh wait, this must be the assistant Thomas had mentioned before.

“Is Thomas available? This is Isabel Warren.”

Shelly paused before cheerfully responding, “Mr. Morgan is in a meeting, but he said he’d take your call. One moment please.” She was off the line before Isabel could tell her not to interrupt him and then his rich voice spoke.

“Izzy, I’m glad you called. What you think about the dinner tonight? I could be out of here by six and at your place by seven fifteen if it’s a go.
